History of Essential Oils

Posted at 10:33 AM on July 18, 2009

The practice of using essential oils is commonly referred to as aromatherapy, and is used for physical and psychological well-being.  In ancient times, sweet smelling oils were more respected for both medicinal and their healing  properties than scent. Essential Oils are often referred to as "Mankind's First Medicine".

In 1922 the famed "boy king's" tomb was opened in Egypt. The tomb of Tutankhamen (King Tut) when opened, it contained alabaster jars filled with 350 liters of oils. The jars were sealed by the plant waxes to preserve the oils over the centuries.

Although tomb robbers had stolen nearly all the precious oils, some of the jars still contained traces of oil. It is said that the first thing the thieves would gather were the essential oils stored in alabaster pots within the tombs. Due to the Healing properties of the Essential oils, they were considered extremely valuable healing tools.

In my search for natural and holistic healing modalities, I stumble upon essential oils. As I began to researching them I learned there were over 200 references to oils, aromatics, incense, and ointments throughout the Old and New Testaments.

Most people are familiar with frankincense and myrrh which the three wise men brought to the Christ Child. But did you also know the frankincense is one of the most powerful immune-boosting oil? It is now being studied and used therapeutically in European Hospitals. Then there is myrrh which contains not only an immune booster but also

contains Anti Inflammatory property.

Today Essential Oils are being rediscovered in modern society. Because of the work of doctors and scientists (like Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, Jean Valnet, Daniel Penoel and Gary Young), the healing power of essential oils is again gaining prominence. For best results, use only pure and natural products; referred to as "therapeutic grade" Essential Oils.

Here is the personal testimony of a Holistic Medical Professional, who understands the power of Essential Oils. "These essential oils truly represent the new frontier of medicine." --- Terry Friedmann, M.D., Co-founder of American Holistic Medical Association
